Working with Leap Motion Controller

Leap Motion Controller Review

Leap Motion Controller- Now and Future

J-Tech Creations, Inc has been working and developing with Leap Motion Controller for a while now. Leap Motion has been offered by Leap Motion, with the price of $79.99+Shipping.

Although Leap Motion Controller is specialized in hand motion, this controller is significantly cheaper compared to other controllers like Kinect ($149). With compact design and attractive silver and black design, Leap Motion Controller has been attracting developer's attention.

Leap Motion Controller is connected to PC through USB 3.0/2.0 cable, with compatibility with Apple Mac OS X 10.7 and later, Windows 7/8 OS, Linux Ubuntu 12.04LTS/13.04. Bottom of the case is made of rubber to prevent slipping.

From a glance Leap Motion Controller looks like just a box. You may wonder how does this "box" read the movement of hands and fingers. If you look closely there are two red LED flashing while it is in use. Between those two LEDs, there are two lenses and data is taken by CMOS image sensor.

In short, two infrared cameras are taking 3D images and interpreting in computer language...Theoretically,yes. However we used it and it does not completely read every gesture. If two fingers are close together or place the hands perpendicular to the sensor, the sensor cannot read movement since gesture hides behind an object.

What are the uses? Critics says that Leap Motions Controllers has a lot of usage, but not for productivity. Many of the software is available at Airspace Store. At this point, familiar application like Google Maps and Cut the Ropes and other educational software. We think that it will be practical for POS system or interactive Kiosk.

We have placed the Leap Motion Controller underneath the Surface tablet to see if we can create an interactive kiosk. The result was fantastic. J-Tech Creation continues to serve in the front-line of this ever changing technology world.

Leap Motion Review

Computer usually use keyboard as an input device.  In addition, mouse and touchpad complements the keyboard for additional command.  Nowadays, touch screen is new form of interface.  With these variety of input devices, is there a need for another interface?

Leap Motion is a 3D gesture detection device that could potentially replace typing in the keyboard, clicking of the mouse, and touching the screen.  Microsoft's Kinect uses the similar concept of gesture-computing, but Leap Motions' controller only uses small area to detect the motion.

In summer of 2013, J-tech were able to obtain this device.  Finally, the concept became reality.  With retail sale, this unique device became available in consumer market.  But does it have a practical use?

What is it?

Leap Motion Controller is motion censor for the computer. This includes Windows PC and Apple Mac, like a mini Kinect.  That controller tracks every finger in your hand (All 10 fingers) in 1/100mm accuracy.

If you put in front of the computer, keyboard, or notebook PC, the physical area above will be where your hands are going to be.  This area covers reachable area when you are in front of the computer.
